In Downstairs (MGM, 1932) Gilbert plays a chauffeur who seduces the maid, played by Virginia Bruce (who became his fourth wife after the picture was finished). Gilbert wrote the screenplay himself. Downstairs may have inspired the PBS series Upstairs, Downstairs.
