In West of Broadway (MGM, 1931), John Gilbert plays a WWI soldier returning to New York after the war ends to be reunited with his jet-setting fiancee. When she breaks off their engagement, he goes on a drinking binge, gets in over his head with a working-class girl, and heads West disillusioned and self-destructive. In this early "talkie," Gilbert not only talks but sings.
